By the end of this year, A&W Restaurants all across North America will no longer be using plastic straws.
Susan Senecal, President and CEO of A&W Canada says reducing waste from landfills is a top priority, and ending the use of plastic straws can make a big difference.
Instead, guests will now be offered the option of a paper straw that is 100 per cent biodegradable, compostable and sustainably sourced.
They are designed to last two to three hours in a drink without breaking down, but naturally biodegrade in three to six months in the environment.
They estimate the switch to paper will keep 82 million plastic straws out of landfills annually.
