The Nova Scotia government is applauding the federal government’s decision to slap the US with tariffs of their own.
The provincial minister of trade, Geoff MacLellan, was unavailable for comment, however Andrew Preeper, a spokesperson for the province provided a statement to Acadia News.
It calls the Americans steel and aluminum tariffs unwarranted and says it will create ‘major impacts in the Canadian economy and beyond.’
Preeper says the province appreciates the Canadian Government’s swift response.
He says the provincial government has been engaging wth stakeholders for several weeks in anticipation of the possibility of tariffs.
“We have been working closely with federal officials regarding the US tariffs and NAFTA.,” says Preeper.
The Federal Government is also looking to speak with Canadians on the tariffs the government is set to impose July 1.
The list of US goods that will have tariffs imposed is available on the Finance Canada website and comments are invited until June 15.

This US decision could create major impacts within the Canadian economy and beyond. We have been working closely with federal officials regarding the US tariffs and NAFTA.
We are analyzing the new information. Being aware that this outcome was a possibility, we have been engaging with stakeholders for the past few weeks and will be reaching out broadly to Nova Scotian stakeholders in the coming weeks. The Federal Government is inviting Canadians to submit their comments on Canada’s proposed list of US goods that will be subject to Canadian tariffs. The list can be found on the Finance Canada website and comments are invited until June 15.
