Nova Scotia is being called a leader in animal welfare.
That from Elizabeth Murphy, the executive director of the provincial SPCA.
She tells Acadia News that changes made to Nova Scotia’s Animal Protection Act last week are significant.
“The passing of this legislation means Nova Scotia is a progressive province and a leader in animal welfare. We will have one of the most advanced pieces of legislation to protect animals. It’s been two years in the working. It was a collaborative process and a lot of diverse groups from animal welfare and other stakeholders took part in the process. I really need to give kudos to minister Colwell (Keith Colwell is Minister of Agriculture) because he and his team worked really hard to make this happen and the SPCA really appreciates all their hard work.”
Under the changes, cosmetic surgery that alters an animal’s appearance will not be permitted unless medically necessary and carried out by a veterinarian.
Animal welfare inspection and enforcement will be strengthened.
