A ‘hold and secure’ at Clark’s Harbour Elementary school yesterday was handled accordingly by staff.
RCMP informed the school’s principal that a ‘person of interest’ could be in the area.
While there was never a direct threat to the school, the outside doors were locked and recess was held inside as a precaution.
Paul Ash, regional executive director of the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education says alerts also went out to parents.
“We push out emails to the parents of the children at the school that are set up on that system, to let them know that the school is in a hold and secure, and that their children are safe.”
Ash says proper protocol was followed at all levels.
“The students were held in secure places, back in their classrooms so we could monitor them more closely.”
He says the principal handled the situation and they worked well with the RCMP, and even in situations where there’s no threat, they always overcompensate when it comes to safety of the students and staff.
RCMP say they had a 28 year old man in custody, but would not release further details.
