A demonstration ahead of last night’s Yarmouth town council meeting is just the beginning for local firefighters.
Over 100 members of local volunteer fire departments marched in solidarity to show their support for keeping four dispatch positions at the Yarmouth fire department.
President of Local 2094 of the International Association of Firefighters Lynn Seeley says they’ll be doing a public relations campaign in the near future.
“We will be seeking the public’s input, good or bad. We’ll be encouraging them to contact their local Councillor and to see if they’d like to see this dispatch service saved.”
The town plans to put out a request for proposals to see if they can provide the same level of service at a less expensive rate.
John Cunningham, a volunteer firefighter in Carleton and Yarmouth municipal councillor says there is a lot of concern from local departments.
“The fire departments through our municipality have expressed their concerns, and want to keep the current system the way it is. We need to know which direction the town is taking. We don’t want this to linger on and have uncertainty through the departments.”
Mayor Pam Mood says nothing has officially been decided, but the funding model is broken and something needs to change.
