According to a newly released study, Statistics Canada is estimating 7.1 million Canadians will be buying cannabis after legalization of recreational use on October 17th.
5.4 million of those users are projected to purchase marijuana legally, to the tune of 3.8 to 4.8 billion dollars per year.
1.7 million users are anticipated to purchase illegal cannabis, at a cost of 1.2 and 1.5 billion dollars annually.
Statistics Canada does caution these are projections only, based on self reported cannabis usage and habits in the National Cannabis Survey – conducted every three months.
They add this estimated usage does not take into account whether there is sufficient supply, and whether people will be able to purchase the quantities they wish.
