Dozens of residents in Brooklyn aren’t too happy with some members of Yarmouth Municipal Council.
They’re upset with how some of them voted on an application to rezone a piece of land to Rural Commercial.
The application was made by Huskilson’s Funeral Homes which wants to build a crematorium on the Brooklyn Road.
The application was recommended for approval by the Planning Advisory Committee.
Council approved it Wednesday night.
Resident Jeremy Watkins, who lives near the site, tells CJLS News that he and others have concerns including property values, noise and emissions from the proposed crematorium.
“I encouraged the council to investigate before making any decisions.”
Watkins says councillors who supported the motion for approval ignored the resident’s concerns.
Warden Leland Anthony, who supported the application, says all the criteria were met.
“People have said to me ‘Leland would you want it next door to you?’ No not in my area. But it’s not next door to anybody. It’s set back 330 feet from the Brooklyn Road, it’s surrounded by trees.”
There was some confusion during the vote.
That can be seen at about an hour and 30 minutes into the meeting.
