There is always a need for blood and an effort to keep inventories well-stocked.
Canadian Blood Services o hosting clinics this week in Clare, Yarmouth and Barrington Passage.
CBS spokesman Peter MacDonald says they are preparing for the Victoria Day long weekend later this month. Long weekends mean more people are travelling which means the risk of motor vehicle accidents is greater.
He says they also need to prepare for the summer.
The problem, he says, is that they are reliant on a small percentage of the population as active blood donors, defined as someone who has given blood in the past 12 months.
‘So that’s less than 4 per cent of Canadians. When people get out of their regular routines and go on summer vacation, we do see a dip in our community blood drives and donations, It’s a great chance now, if it’s been a while or if you’re thinking of being a new donor, we have more available places in Clare, Yarmouth and Barrington Passage then we’re used to.”
MacDonald says they’re still building up lost inventories from a few months ago. Canadian Blood Services lost 790 planned units of blood after winter storms cancelled 16 clinics.
