Later this month, one of the original walking events in Yarmouth will take place again.
It’s the 47th Tri-County VON Walkathon on Saturday, May 27th.
Money raised will go to the VON as they support caregivers and programs for seniors.
The VON’s Derrick Babin says the event has changed over the years.
“We started at the Yarmouth high school and would walk all the way past the golf course, out to Cook’s Dairy and back to the high school. It was a big walk, there were lots of participants, and it was a novel fundraiser for Yarmouth.”
Babin says last year, about 25 people took part and $4,500 was raised.
He says this is an important fundraiser.
“It really allows us to be able to do the work we do in the community. Things like supporting caregivers and providing education, and it helps with our Adult Day program, which gives that social interaction aspect to a population that may otherwise be lonely.”
This year the walk begins at Marion Hall on Albert Street at 10am.
He says there are three distances to choose from: 4.5, 5.5 and 8 kilometres.
