A walking trail has been blocked off in Lockeport.
There are safety issues with the Trestle trail bridge.
High tides and storm surges has created erosion on the ocean side of the rail bed, and sink holes have appeared.
Town Mayor George Harding says this is a significant safety issue.
“It’s a very popular walking trail in Lockeport. It was a hard choice to shut it down. However. there are safety issues that we felt until the engineers tell us exactly what needs to be done, that was the prudent thing to do.”
The town has done some repairs and resurfacing over the years, but conditions deteriorated significantly over the past winter.
A preliminary engineer assessment is expected soon.
Harding says he is hoping for a cost-effective resolution.
“Depending on what engineers tell us, we are hoping for something that is cost effective so we can keep it open. Otherwise, we’d have to look at alternatives, and I don’t even know what those could be at this point.”
