An Acadian rights group in Nova Scotia will seek a court order asking if the current provincial electoral map is unconstitutional.
This after an Appeal court ruling in January that determined NDP government interference in the electoral boundary commission in 2012 violated a section of the Charter of Rights.
Before an election was called Sunday, the Liberals announced they would create an independent commission on Effective Electoral Representation.
The commission would consult with Acadians, francophones and African Nova Scotians to determine what effective electoral representation could mean.
La Fédération acadienne de la Nouvelle-Écosse President Ghislain Boudreau says his group was disappointed with that announcement.
“We don’t believe it is up to the community to decide or define what effective representation is. We want the court to define that.”
Boudreau says that would add an extra step in the process.
He says they have sent a series of questions to all parties asking their opinion on where things stand.
“We’re still hoping to work with the next government, whichever party that will be, and bring this to a solution. We’re here to represent the best interests of our community.”
