The leader of Nova Scotia’s NDP party says the balanced budget government is expected to announce is the wrong approach.
Gary Burrill was speaking prior to the opening of the Legislature on Tuesday.
He says the province can’t cut its way to prosperity.
“The idea that you can solve our problems by cutting back and taking things away has been entirely discredited and it has no evidence from any jurisdiction in its favour.”
Burrill says a program of investment is needed in areas like education, health care and long term care to ensure the stability of the province and that is the opposite of what the Liberals have provided in their time in office.

He says the Liberals have had over three years to make good on their promise of a doctor for every Nova Scotian.
But, on the eve of their latest budget they’re more concerned with balancing the books.
Burrill says that’s not the way the NDP will address the health concerns of Nova Scotians.
“It’s an investment that’s going to be front and centre for us, first and foremost. And the investments are going to begin from the very day that we’re sworn into office. That’s the way you do something that you establish as a priority.”
Burrill says investment, not cuts, in things like education and health care is the way to grow the economy.
