Premier Stephen McNeil says Nova Scotia is preparing for the legalization of cannabis.
The federal government announced last week that cannabis would be legalized across the country by July 1, 2018.
McNeil says the province is on board, but they have concerns.
“We support it, we’re there. But we need to make sure about impairment. We need to make sure they’re able to test like they do with alcohol. It’s important to make sure people aren’t operating motor vehicles and other aspects – it’s about safety for us.”
The premier says he is waiting for the details to be worked out.
“Putting in place the proper protocols around the legalization of marijuana – the ministers of justice are dealing with now. It will eventually get to the first ministers, but they’re working on it now.”
McNeil says he supports the decision out of Ottawa and Nova Scotia will be ready when pot becomes legal.
