There had been some discussion about permitting them after some residents said it made it easier to maintain everything in one container.
The concern of most on town council is that the units can be unsightly and enforcing a bylaw would be difficult.
Last Thursday council passed second reading of the bylaw, keeping things the same.
Mayor Pam Mood is pleased council kept the status quo.
“Some peopole would disagree but we’re a historical seaport town with beautiful manicured lawns and the ;last thing we need are garbage bins on the front lawns.”
Councillor Wade Cleveland disagrees.
He tells CJLS News the containers are convenient, not just for seniors.
“It’s also very convenient for the people who are picking up the garbage because it’s all concentrated in one particular area. I believe sometimes council legislates to the lowest common denominator.”
Both Cleveland and Councillor Clifford Hood thinks a permit system should be developed.
They say that way it could be enforced.
