The president of the Yarmouth local of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union says they hope the province will not use recommendations from the Council to Improve Classroom Conditions as political window dressing.
Yesterday Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Karen Casey said she received 18 initial recommendations from the council and that the province and school boards will implement 8 of those immediately.
Rollie Hannem says the proof of the government’s long-term commitment remains to be seen.
“We’re a little bit leery of how the Nova Scotia Liberal government works with education. We all know there’s an election coming up and they’re going to want to at least put new paint on some things but this particular house needs a whole new renovation and right now we’re just moving some furniture around.”
Hannem says classroom issues that really bother teachers are on the horizon but are not in any of the council recommendations as yet like discipline and attendance policies.
He is pleased that there are teachers on the council and that “at least things are being looked at.”
