Rodney Crowe, who lives on Tooker Street says a collapsed sewer pipe flooded his basement last month.
Now, he’s on the hook to fix the pipe, even though it’s off his property.
The town by-law says residents are responsible for pipes that hook to the main sewer line, which in Crowe’s case is on the other side of the street.
Crowe says it doesn’t make sense.
“I bought the house, I didn’t buy the street so why do I have to fix the street ? Why do I have to pay big dollars to have this done ? I’ll pay whatever it takes to do my share but I shouldn’t have to fix their pipes too.”
Crowe is circulating a petition on Facebook and will present it to town council next month.
At last week’s Committee of the Whole meeting, council decided to further examine the sewer by-law.
However, Mayor Pam Mood says if the town assisted in the cost of repairs, it would cost taxpayer dollars.
“There’s two sides. Should everyone in town be paying because you have an issue with your with your line ? We are at the table. We’ve asked staff to look into different scenarios to see what they can come up with.”
Mood says the same thing happened on her property last year, and she had to pay over $10,000 to fix it.
