The head of the Weymouth Doctor Recruitment Committee is pleased with an announcement by the province last week.
Linda Gregory is reacting to news that three doctors and a family practice nurse will soon join the Digby and Area Health Services Centre.
However, Gregory is hoping the province is still looking for more doctors.
She says the latest announcement will help the situation, but it won’t alleviate the problem altogether.
“The problems are there because there are so many without doctors. People are concerned about the length of the drive and the challenges they have to even get to the doctor in the first place.”
Gregory says she isn’t criticizing government, but more needs to be done.
“We do appreciate what has been done. It’s been a lot of hard work and a team effort, but as the chair of the Weymouth Doctor Recruitment Committee, we know more work needs to be done.”
The province says 10,000 people in Digby and surrounding areas will have access to primary care.
Government did announce that some care will be provided at the Weymouth Medical Centre.
The family practice nurse will start in the spring, and the new doctors are expected to arrive this fall.
