Yarmouth Recreation will partner with Mental Health Services and Dalhousie University to provide the Steps To Connect Program.
The new program will help adults at risk of social isolation connect with programs that help them stay healthy, active and connected with their community.
Yarmouth MLA Zach Churchill made the announcement this morning that the province is providing over $37,000 to the program.
He says Yarmouth Recreation will ensure that no one with chronic illness is left in isolation.
“”There is so much going on in our community, but we know that some people need assistance and encouragement to feel connected. “Everyone deserves to feel included, and that’s so important to our mental and physical health.”
Frank Grant, Yarmouth Recreation Director says they have a research assistant from Dalhousie and are in the process of hiring a coordinator.
“We’re happy to provide extra support for community members who need it,. “This funding will allow us to target those at risk of being isolated from the community and connect them with programs, services and events they might enjoy.”
Karen Jenkins, acting operations executive director, Western Zone for the Nova Scotia Health Authority said the grants give people in Yarmouth the chance to develop and achieve their own goals to be healthy and stay healthy.
