A good start for the O’Regan’s Subaru Western Hurricanes at the major bantam provincial hockey championships.
Bridgewater’s Mason Beck had a hat-trick and Jeremy Robar of Mahone Bay stopped 14 shots as the Hurricanes beat The Novas 4-0 in their opening game.
Yarmouth’s Ben Charles scored the other goal.
Head Coach Shawn Woodworth says he felt his team dictated the pace of play.
“We took the play to them. I thought our forecheck was tremendous, we created a lot of scoring opportunities and capitalized on some of the turnovers and jumped out to a lead. I thought we played a complete game.”
The Hurricanes have a pair of games today; they meet Dartmouth at 10 a.m. followed by matchup against the All-Credit Auto Rangers at 6 p.m.
Dartmouth has a win and tie through day one after claiming the wildcard spot in the tournament.
Woodworth says his team will have to be prepared.
“They’re a big strong team and we’ll try and use our speed to our advantage and make them chase the game a bit. Hopefully, we can draw them into some penalty trouble and capitalize on our special teams.”
The Hurricanes won two out of the three regular season games against Dartmouth.
All games are being played in the Apple Dome Arena at the Kings Mutual Centre in Berwick.
