The look of underwear and lingerie will be examined later this year in Shelburne County.
The exhibit “Underneath it All: 100 years of Underwear and Lingerie in North America from 1860-1960” is coming to the Shelburne County Museum from mid-June to October.
Curator Allison Burnett says clothing has evolved as it relates to what’s happening in society.
She says women in the late 1800s didn’t dress for work or weren’t as active.
“As you move into the 1900s you start to see women are going into the working world and they need to be able to move around a bit more and it’s becoming more normal for women to participate in sports, so you start to see the type of underwear changes as the clothing change because their roles are changing.”
Burnett says the museum exhibit stems from Missouri and includes interpretive panels.
She is looking for people to donate items to the exhibit from 1860-1960 including bustles, brassieres, girdles, and corsets.
