The three levels of government have announced a major contribution towards the redevelopment of the Yarmouth Ferry Terminal.
The announcement was made this morning at the Water Street facility.
The federal and provincial governments will contribute $3 million each towards the $9.7 million cost.
The Town of Yarmouth, the Municipality of Yarmouth and the Municipality of Argyle will pay the remainder.
The work includes upgrading and relocating passenger inspection line booths, replacing the pontoon and transfer bridge, and improving overall terminal facilities like external lighting and passenger waiting areas.
West Nova MP Colin Fraser says there are great opportunities.
“To welcome smaller cruise ships and more visitors. We know that the ferry terminal here is key infrastructure to ensure that people are welcomed to our community and that they have a good impression of our town when they arrive.”
MLA Zach Churchill said about eight years ago, the ferry terminal could have been a liability but then the Cat ferry returned and tourism numbers and seafood exports doubled.
“The fact that we are today making this announcement with our municipal partners, our federal partners, and I’m happy to be here on behalf of the province, I think speaks to what we can accomplish when we work together in this community.”
Mayor Pam Mood said while the fishery is the mainstay of the economy, but second to that is tourism which is helping us grow.
“It’s businesses that have had the guts to stand up and say ‘if this is a long-term deal, then I can start a business here.”
She said this is only phase one.
Warden Leland Anthony says today is a good example of the three levels of government working together.
“When those three units get together and have a discussion, see the importance of what it means to a community if we come together and work on a project, it’s just the beginning.”
Warden Richard Donaldson said this: “We hope the results of this project will bring an added level of pride for Bay Ferries and the community and that the ferry service between Nova Scotia and New England will continue to thrive.”
The ferry terminal is owned by the town and municipality of Yarmouth while Argyle is a funding partner at a lower scale.
