Midwifery has returned to the South Shore.
Both Janet Holtham and Molly Lumby were hired from out of province.
They’re being mentored by current mid-wife, Leslie Niblett.
Sally Loring with the province’s health authority says several mothers from the area recently showed up at Fisherman’s Memorial to officially welcome them.
“I think that shows the support there is in the local community for the midwifery service. And they were delighted that it was ‘reborn’ as we’ve described it.”
Loring says the new hires will open up approximately 30 spaces for expectant mothers.
“The fact that there are three of them means that somebody can be on call, somebody can be providing a clinic and somebody can be on vacation or doing some training.”
Midwifery services are provided at four locations across Nova Scotia, two in Dartmouth, Antigonish and in the South Shore.
Loring is pleased the staffing numbers will provide stable and dependable care for women in the South Shore.
