Two provincial beaches in our area remain closed due to high bacteria counts.
Port Maitland Beach in Yarmouth County and Mavillette Beach in Digby County were closed August 13 to swimmers.
They will remain closed until water-testing results show that water is safe.
Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service director Paul D’Eon tells Acadia News the most recent test results came in late Friday afternoon.
“Unfortunately the second round of testing still did not meet the Canadian recreational guidelines for salt water safety. We retested and sent a sample to the lab yesterday and we should have the results by late Wednesday afternoon.”
He says both beaches were closed because the bacteria, enterococci, a bacteria found in mammal fecal matter, exceeded permissible levels.
D’Eon says the source of the bacteria is not known.
He says lifeguards will be present only to advise people at Mavilette and Port Maitland beaches not to swim.
Port Maitland and Mavillette Beach will remain closed for swimming. The water quality testing process is ongoing. Updates will be made on social media and on our website once new water quality results are received. https://t.co/IgcNEVU6ue
