The provincial government will begin the process of forcing a contract on Nova Scotia teachers tonight.
Premier Stephen McNeil has recalled MLA’s for a special sitting of the legislature, where he plans to ‘bring an end’ to work-to-rule job action by the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.
Yesterday’s storm delayed the opening of the session until tonight at 8.
Last week, over 78 percent of NSTU members rejected a third tentative agreement with the province.
Yarmouth NSTU President Rollie Hannem says the vote means teachers don’t trust McNeil.
“This past week, the ‘no ‘vote came out of the fact that teachers didn’t trust what the Premier was saying. and then it was validated by the fact they are not bargaining with us.”
Hannem says doing away with collective bargaining makes this a sad time in the history of Nova Scotia.
“Whatever the government wishes, it’s been forced upon us. In this case it’s us, who knows what it will be next time. We’ve been making fun of that a little bit south of the border, and now it’s sort of hitting home here.”
Yarmouth NSTU members are planning a rally tomorrow afternoon.
