A 3.6 percent drop in population for the Town of Yarmouth.
The 2016 Census reveals there are just over 6,500 people living in town, compared to nearly 6,800 in 2011.
Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood says the numbers are certainly close to true, but some were left off the voting list during the last municipal election.
“Somewhere between four and five hundred people weren’t on the voters list. You wonder how many people in a small town of 6,500 may have been missed in the Census. But it’s an issue, it’s about finding jobs for people.”
The population of the Municipality of Yarmouth fell 2.6 percent to 9,845 people, and for the county it’s down 3.4 percent to 24,419.
Mood says the only thing municipal units can do is set the table for economic development and hope for businesses to set up shop.
“We have an Economic Development Officer who we believe is off the charts, she’s doing everything she can to make sure our community is ready for businesses to set up, and with that, jobs are created.”
