When a band or artist announces their retirement it is a bittersweet moment for everyone involved. It could be for any reason, like they’ve been in the game for most if not all their lives. Take Elton John for example. he has been making music since 1968, that’s 58 years of releasing music, and that’s only counting since his first single “I’ve Been Loving You” was officially released, not everything that lead up to that point! Touring is a physically demanding business, performing in front of fans, then hitting the road immediately after each gig, add on tours that go across the world and the Jetlag adds up pretty quick, it’s not something for the feint of heart! So you cant really blame a band when they decide to call it quits after years of touring and performing.
But retirement is seldom something that lasts forever in the music industry. Typically announced with a farewell tour, it creates a sense of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out.) you missed them last time and now if you don’t go to one of their shows this round you will NEVER get the chance to see them again!
Well… not always.
We’ve seen it time and time again, From bands like Kiss and Slayer to Elton John, Cher and more, a few years after their retirement announcement they’re right back on stage or in the studio again. It could happen for many reasons, the economy, fan demand, or just a need to scratch that itch. If you’d been performing on stage with your friends for most of your life you’d grow to miss them, and the “good ol’ days” too! Sometimes that means a new tour is announced or a few one off shows. All to help scratch that nostalgic itch for those on stage and of course you, their fans!
What band or artist would you like to see come out of retirement?
