Good morning Potato Chip Lovers !
On Sat, Mar 14, 2026 we celebrate Potato Chip Day !
Why?
It was invented by chef George Crum (yup, ‘Crum’!) in 1853 at a resort in Saratoga Springs NY after an uppity diner complained the potato slices were too thick.
A number of notable accounts have disputed the story of Crum’s culinary innovation. Recipes for frying thin potato slices had already been published in some cookbooks by the early 1800s. Additionally, several reports on Crum himself—including a 1983 commissioned biography of the chef and his own obituary—curiously lacked any mention of potato chips whatsoever.
My Late Dad used to work for Scotties Potato Chip Company (Acadia Foods Ltd.) , the plant was located in New Minus Nova Scotia. Needless to say as kids we had our fair share of chips in the house , even got to tour the plant a few times . We would be given paper hats to wear and a paper bucket to collect hot chips fresh off the conveyor belts ” something that would never happen today “, it was an experience and a memorable treat. The plant remains but the company has since changed names a few times . from Scotties to ( Frito -Lay ) About a year later Acadia Foods was purchased by General Foods and Scotties was rebranded under Hostess Foods, a GF subsidiary. The Scotties brand eventually disappeared when Hostess Foods partnered with Frito-Lay (owned by PepsiCo) in 1987.

At one point in time The Hostess Chip company thought it would be a good Idea to have These Flavors ” ( Cherry , Orange & Grape )
Hostess Foods produced cherry, orange, and grape-flavored potato chips in Canada during the mid 1970’s (specifically around 1975–1976). Marketed in 25-cent foil bags, these fruit-flavored snacks were a “dismal failure” and were quickly discontinued after being poorly received by consumers.
