Barrington’s warden says budget cuts will impact tourism in his community.
Shaun Hatfield recently wrote to the province’s tourism minister about the closure of the Woolen Mill museum, and 20 percent rollbacks to the Seal Island Light and Old Meeting House.
Hatfield calls the decision unacceptable.
“It’s happened without any connection or consultations with key stakeholders, as well as the broader community. It makes us wonder how these decisions are made without involving the people directly impacted,” said Hatfield.
He adds visits to the museum were up 94 percent last year compared to 2024.
“When you look at those numbers, this doesn’t seem to be the time to cut funding to tourism infrastructure.”
The warden worries that Barrington will be less attractive to visitors, especially those arriving on the ‘CAT’ ferry from Yarmouth.
Hatfield says taking the tolls off Halifax bridges could have saved the province money, and kept these museums open.
