Yesterday (Monday February 16th) Was Nova Scotia Heritage Day in Nova Scotia, held on the third Monday of February. It is a statutory holiday that highlights a person, place or event that highlights the provinces history. This years honouree was Joseph Willie Comeau, who served nearly five decades in politics support Acadians and their way of life.
The date has many names depending on where you are, Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan and Ontario the day is known as family day.
In PEI the day is known as Islander Day, which pre-dates the introduction of Family Day federally. “Family Day” and it’s equivalents were introduced in 2015, while Islander day was traditionally celebrated on the second Monday of February beginning in 2009.
In Manitoba the day is recognized as Louis Riel Day, celebrating his many accomplishments. Louis Riel was one of the founding members of Manitoba and a leader amongst the Métis people. Leading two resistance movements against the young Government of Canada, fighting for rights of Métis people until his defeat at the Battle of Batoche. Despite a large public outcry Riel was executed after facing trial in 1885.
