February 6th is National Bubblegum Day, A day celebrating that tasty chewable stuff that freshens your breath… Or so I thought until I looked into it!
National Bubble Gum day isn’t just about the gum itself, but using it to raise money. Ruth Spiro, Author of the “Baby Loves” series of children’s books came up with the idea behind the day. Most classrooms won’t let you chew gum, it’s seen as distracting both for the chewer and their fellow students! But on Bubble Gum Day students could raise money for school activities by “buying” the right to chew gum in class! This also teaches students the value of charity and raising money when the class gets to use funds raised to do something fun!
Some facts about Bubblegum
Bubblegum turns 98 this year!: It was invented by Walter Diemer, an accountant for the Fleer Chewing Gum Company in 1928! Walter was 23 at the time.
Frank Fleer, the founder of the company Walter worked for tried to create a similar gum called “Blibber-Blubber” in 1906, but it was too sticky and never caught on.
It’s colour is pink because it was the only colour dye available at the time!
You can still buy the original Brand: While the recipe has changed over the years, the original brand “Dubble Bubble” is still widely available in stores!
