Earlier this week was Lego day, celebrating the invention of one of the worlds most successful toys. But did you know Lego wasn’t always making plastic bricks? In fact the Lego group has been around a lot longer!
The Lego Group was founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen in Billund, Denmark, Back then they made wooden toys, like cars, ducks, trains etc.
The switch to making plastic toys wouldn’t happen until almost 30 years later in 1960 when a fire raged through the factory, destroying the warehouse and their inventory of already made toys. But rather than mourn through the tragedy they picked up the pieces and made the decision to switch to plastic toys the day after the fire!
I remember when I was a kid and my parents bought me a box of generic pieces. It came with some placement mats you could attach your creations to. I made houses, forts, cars, street cleaners, the list was endless!
Then came the sets with themes, from knights in castles to your favourite Star Wars characters and more!
Lego really has figured out how to grow with their fans, with sets targeting the youngest of children to the oldest adults looking for a challenging and rewarding build!
Do you have any Lego sets in your home?
