There’s now no timeframe for Barrington’s new recreation centre to open.
Construction on the multi-purpose add-on to the Sandy Wickens Memorial Arena on Sherose Island began in the spring of 2024.
The $8.9 million facility was supposed to be finished by July of last year, then the date was pushed to December, and then January.
The Municipality of Barrington says their latest update shows electrical work and inspections still need to happen before the public can enter.
They call the delays ‘unacceptable,’ pointing to a lack of communication between the contractors and designers.
Warden says there’s ‘frustration and embarrassment’
Warden Shaun Hatfield says they want to be completely honest and transparent about the process so far.
“Because when we announce that the doors are going to open at a certain time, and then we realize they won’t be because of factors beyond our control, it is frustrating and embarrassing,” said Warden Hatfield.
Other factors include underperforming subcontractors, and some materials being back-ordered.
A soft launch was supposed to happen Monday, the municipality noted they don’t feel confident in sharing any more dates.
Hatfield says they need to know that the work is finished.
“Our approach now, is ‘you let us know when you get the job done, we’ll pick a date.’ We can then communicate to the people, and they’ll know we’re being straight up and can trust us in our communication.”
The municipality says there’s still lots of excitement over the project.
“While this process has not gone as we hoped, it is important to keep in mind what this project means for our municipality. This is a huge step forward in our ability to provide enhanced recreation services, activities, and events.”
