Nova Scotia Power is asking customers to cut back on electricity use as extreme cold strains the system.
Heating needs during the cold snap are putting “significant pressure” on the power grid, according to the utility.
The company asked customers to conserve energy during peak hours — from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The utility noted that turning off high‑use appliances and lowering thermostats to the lowest comfortable setting can help reduce demand.
Teams have been preparing generating sites throughout the week to ensure they are producing as much power as possible.
The company also highlighted the use of two new grid‑scale battery sites to support the system.
Neighbouring utilities are working with Nova Scotia Power to share resources during the cold stretch.
The utility has also published additional information on energy conservation and its preparations for extreme weather.
