A former church in Wedgeport is now in the hands of the community.
The Acadian Heritage Society purchased the St. Michael’s building from the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth for $75,000.
The last mass was held there on Christmas Eve, 2023, and the church was desecrated a few months later.
Society president Curtis Doucet says the building is part of Wedgeport’s culture and history.
“It’s over 200 years of history. The Acadians came back with nothing but the clothes on their back, and their faith. They built these beautiful buildings, which are amazing. It would be such a loss to not have this in the community,” said Doucet.
Multi-cultural facility planned
During the last two years, a feasibility study was done to see what funding is available to maintain the building and make it profitable.
Doucet says they have big plans.
“We want to turn it into a multi-cultural centre. It’s such a beautiful building, the stained glass windows are exceptional, it’s so unique and holds 1,000 people, it can offer a lot to not only Wedgeport, but southwest Nova Scotia.”
He adds they envision, weddings, community celebrations and more happening at the facility.
The society hosting a community meeting at the building this Saturday at 2 p.m. to talk about future plans, fundraising opportunities and more.
A holiday celebration is also planned with a visit from Santa and a tree lighting.
