Legendary Canadian curler Colleen Jones has died at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer, according to her son Luke.
In a post on social media, he says she passed late Tuesday morning after a three-year battle.
“Late this morning while looking out over the ocean on her favourite spot in Maders Cove, with my dad, my brother and myself beside her, mom passed away,” reads the post. “Please think of your favorite Colleen Jones moment, cherish it. Hurry and love hard.”
Jones, a Halifax native, was named the second greatest Nova Scotian athlete of all time, behind Sidney Crosby, by the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
She won six Scotties Tournaments of Hearts and was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2022 and the Canada Sports of Hall of Fame in 2016.
Jones had a successful broadcasting career with the CBC for 40 years.
Condolences have started pouring in.
Premier Tim Houston says Jones is a true Nova Scotia legend.
“Making our province proud for decades throughout her career and later in broadcasting. A world champion, she coached the next generation of curlers to excel in the sport.”
Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore says, “Colleen was one of Nova Scotia’s best: as an athlete, a journalist, and an ambassador of Bluenoser pride.”
Curling Canada says it is with profound sadness they share in the passing of one of the most exceptional figures in Canadian curling.
