Firefighters in Weymouth helped many through a very dry summer and fall.
They opened their pumphouse for water fill-ups in August until earlier this month.
Fire captain Nick Glavin says it was open for 400 hours in total, with volunteers on site.
“We even had a few retired firefighters, and a man in his early 90’s helping us out, because it was a good thing for the community,” said Glavin.
Stats from the department showed about 5,700 vehicles used the service, hauling the equivalent of 2.3 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
“We didn’t ask where people were from,” added Glavin.
“But we know that the water was being moved out of Digby County, we had people hauling loads to the Annapolis Valley too.”
Glavin thanks the community and volunteers for their help.
“It’s a great feeling to help out, and our members were happy that people could use the service. We even had one person join the fire department because of this, and he’s been with us for two months. You never know what a difference you can make by opening up some water.”
Glavin says they plan on upgrading the pumphouse in the future.
