A homecoming for Yarmouth’s Cameron Nickerson.
He’s playing at the former art gallery for Nova Scotia Music Week Saturday night.
Nickerson is a country-bluegrass artist, and has been playing since junior high, many in Yarmouth remember his former band ‘The Rockabillys.’
Since that time Nickerson has carved his own path, releasing his first solo LP ‘Detours’ in 2018.
A marketing campaign for his April, 2025 single ‘Wheels of Steel’ was nominated for a CCMA award.
Nickerson just released a single and music video ‘Zombie.’
He says it tells a personal story.
“I wrote this song before I got sober from alcohol. For the video, I kind of put my body back into my old shoes, which was an interesting feeling. But I feel like I got a lot of raw material out, and I’m very happy with the way it turned out,” said Nickerson.
He says as a songwriter, he loves writing songs that people can connect with.
“I like to write lyrics that are truthful, and hopefully it can help someone down the line.”
Nickerson says he had to miss the festival in 2023, so he’s happy to have an opportunity to play in his hometown.
“You can expect a couple quick stories, laughs, tears and a good-time. I enjoy performing with others, and I’ve been doing that more and more lately. Being locked in and enjoying the moment with the band members and the crowd, it’s special.”
He says Music Week gives a great opportunity to artists.
“Networking is a huge part of it. It’s a great time of year to narrow in on who you want to meet and pitch to them. It’s helpful for making those next steps in your career.”
