The art gallery building now belongs to the Town of Yarmouth.
The province sold the former Western branch of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia to the town for one dollar.
The plan is to make it an arts and culture hub, in line with their downtown blueprint.
Mayor Pam Mood says the historic structure is important to the town.
“And how do you let it go? It’s a majestic building right in the downtown core. We couldn’t fathom what might happen to this building, so we wanted to take ownership,” said Mayor Mood.
She says they’re in discussions with a local group about operations, and will have more to share.
“We want to create a hub of activity, vibrancy, placemaking and community building. This is exciting, I’m trying to contain myself about this one.”
She says they’re also going to hear feedback from the community.
The roof of the building is nearing its end of life, and Mood says staff will be looking at that.
