The Yarmouth Mariners won and lost during their season opening weekend at home.
They started their MHL campaign Friday night with a 5-4 win over the Campbellton Tigers in front of nearly 1,300 fans at Mariners Centre.
Captain Justin Garneau scored the game winner with 17 seconds left, and says his team never gave up in the back and forth affair.
“It wasn’t our best game, but we kept battling and found a way to win. That’s what good teams do,” said Garneau after the victory.
He was named the game’s first star, Louis-Carl Tremblay had two goals, Jared Pitman and Grayson Pardy also lit the lamp and Keegan Warren made 29 saves for the win.
Yarmouth followed that up with a 5-2 loss to division rival Summerside at home Saturday night.
They didn’t get on the board until the third period after the Western Capitals built a 5-0 lead.
Head Coach and General Manager Laurie Barron says they’ve got some work to do.
“I didn’t mind our start against the Caps, but they got a couple and then we lost our way. It was men against boys, especially in the second period. We did play fairly solid the last 10 minutes of the third,” said Barron.
Liam Duquette and Cole MacLeod had the Mariner goals and Keegan Warren stopped 40 of 45 shots.
Attendance was nearly 1,200.
The Mariners’ next game is Thursday night in Truro.
