Hockey season is here again in Yarmouth.
The Mariners are getting training camp underway with several practices and three intersquad games this weekend.
Head Coach and General Manager Laurie Barron says 44 players are here to start.
“It’s a short period of time for the guys to show their skills. There are lots of jobs available, and we’re looking for effort and attention to detail,” said Barron, who has won over 500 MHL games as a head coach.
Yarmouth is hoping to get back to the playoffs this year, they missed for the first time in nine years last season.
Familiar names like Justin Garneau, Yarmouth’s Jared Pitman and goalie Keegan Warren are back, but there will be lots of new faces.
Barron says plenty of prospects and draft picks are in attendance.
“If there’s one silver-lining of missing the playoffs, we were able to really stock our shelves, our scouting staff did a great job. We have a ton of talent on our 50-man roster.”
The first intersquad game is Friday night at 6 p.m, then Saturday night at 7 p.m, followed by Sunday at 1 p.m.
The games are free to attend.
The Mariners will play two exhibition games next weekend, Friday, September 5 at home and Saturday, September 6 on the road, both against the Valley Wildcats.
Yarmouth opens the regular season on September 12 at home against the Campbellton Tigers.
