Professional women’s hockey players are showcasing their skills in Yarmouth.
Seventy-six girls in minor hockey are taking part in the Coastal Female Hockey Development camp this week at Mariners Centre.
It’s being led by Toronto Sceptres defender and Yarmouth native Allie Munroe.
She says it’s great to give back to the area.
“It sold out in about an hour, it’s very cool that we can bring a camp like this to Yarmouth,” said Munroe, who will enter her third season with Toronto next season.
The camp began Monday, and participants are learning the fundamentals of the game while taking part in on and off-ice activities.
Munroe says the growth of the PWHL has been amazing, and she’d love to see a team come to Atlantic Canada.
“The East Coast and the Maritimes are hungry for women’s hockey. Every time there’s a Team Canada event they show up, and I think it would be no different for the PWHL.”

Munroe’s former teammate, goaltender and Amherst native CJ Jackson says it’s great to be back this year.
“Being able to access pro players and coaches, it’s so cool for the kids here. We were in their shoes not long ago, if you can see it, you can be it,” said Jackson.
Jackson signed with the new PWHL franchise in Seattle, and is excited to get started there.
“I’m really happy to be a part of the PWHL, it’s a privilege, and to play hockey is a gift. To be in a new franchise in a new city is a special opportunity,” said Jackson.
Jackson echoed Munroe’s comments about future expansion to Eastern Canada, saying a team here would be well supported.
Sarah Bujold, who plays pro-hockey overseas is also in attendance, along with Kali Flanagan of the Sceptres.
