There could be big changes to planning in the Town of Yarmouth.
The town has received an application from the mall on Starrs Road to permit medical clinic and office uses.
These types of businesses have only been allowed to operate in certain zones, including the downtown.
Mayor Pam Mood says preserving the downtown is key.
“We’re seeing towns dying all over the country and North America, and it’s because they haven’t put the right planning in place to preserve their downtown, and that includes offices,” said Mayor Mood.
The Mayor adds that they want to hear from the public if a change is needed, or they need to stay the course.
“It’s about all office uses in the future, not just medical. It could be a dangerous step, it could be an easy one to take. We’re certainly going to look at all sides of it.”
The open house meeting will be held next Thursday June 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the mall.
The application will have to go to the Planning Advisory Committee, who would then recommend it to council for a public hearing and first reading, followed by a second reading.
