Another successful WE CARE Radiothon in Yarmouth.
$136,409 was raised for a new birthing bed, infant incubators and scales through the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation and Y95.
Donations came in over the phone and online, many people dropped into headquarters at the Yarmouth Mall to give money in person.
Paediatrician Dr. Rotem Weissmann says the new equipment will help them give better care to the community.
“To really make sure that our kids stay here and not need to go far away to Halifax for treatment. You want to stay home and comfortable with your family and not have to drive three hours for care,” said Dr. Weissmann, who moved to Yarmouth in January as part of a three-person paediatrician team.
Dr, Joel Cox is the site lead for paediatricians, and notes that it’s essential to have the right equipment, and the right staff to run it.
This is the ninth annual Radiothon, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised for several departments at the hospital over that time.
The foundation’s Mary Surette says there’s incredible support from donors every year.
“Healthcare is important to everyone, and we have to make sure that we have the best healthcare provided for all the residents of the Tri-Counties. I’m overwhelmed by the support here today, and we can’t thank everyone enough,” said Surette.
She says it was especially heartwarming to see donations from students at Port Maitland and Par-en-Bas schools.
The WE CARE Radiothon was broadcast live on Y95 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
