More resources are coming for RCMP in Clare.
Council has agreed to budget for two more officers to join the Meteghan detachment.
The request came as police deal with a high volume of calls and increased violence in the area.
Warden Yvon LeBlanc says council heard from both RCMP and the public.
“Wednesday night at our regular council meeting, we decided to go ahead with their recommendation. In next year’s budget, we’ll have two more members for the RCMP detachment in Meteghan,” said Warden LeBlanc.
He says it was an easy decision, as RCMP know best on what’s needed to run the detachment.
Last week, Sgt. Jeff LeBlanc with the Meteghan detachment told us they currently have seven officers.
“That’s to cover 24/7, seven days a week and 365 days a year. For seven members to work those type of hours, it doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room,” says Sgt. LeBlanc.
“The locals know that we’ve had an abundance of issues surrounding the fishing dispute and other criminal activity. It doesn’t seem like an anomaly, it’s the new normal.”
