Four straight losses for the Yarmouth Mariners.
They fell 4-3 to the division-leading Summerside Western Capitals Sunday at Mariners Centre in a back-and-forth contest.
The Caps found the game winner with about three minutes left in the third period, Keefe Marshall scored twice for Yarmouth and former Cap Liam Bridger potted his first as a Mariner.
Keegan Warren made over 50 saves in his second game of the weekend, one night after he was chased from the crease in an 8-2 loss to Pictou County at the Fishtank.
Change has been the theme of the week for the Mariners.
After several trade deadline deals, the team debuted seven new players over the weekend along with Warren’s return from the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats.
Head Coach and General Manager Laurie Barron says he’s proud of the effort Sunday.
“We bounced back. It’s been a tough week with all the trades and restructuring the team. We haven’t had a chance to practice. Saturday night was tough, but Keegan Warren showed who he is today (Sunday.) The kids battled hard, I feel bad because they gave me all they had,” said Barron.
The Mariners sit 12 points out a playoff spot in the Eastlink South Division.
They’ve got games against the Crushers, Ramblers and Bearcats coming up on the road.
“We practice Monday and Tuesday to get more systems in place. I think when we have everyone here, things will look brighter. We still have Adam Pinsent joining the team this week and possibly another player from the U.S. Things look bright, but it would have been nice to get the two points today.”
Barron was honoured for reaching 500 MHL coaching wins before Sunday’s game, he got the milestone in a win against West Kent on December 15.
“For me it’s always been about the players. It was nice, but it makes me feel old, I’ve been around a long time. Very classy for the team to do that.”
The Mariners also wore Acadian themed jerseys over the weekend, and will wear them at home for the month of January.
All proceeds from the auctioned off sweaters will go to the Gilles Boudreau and Friends Cancer Help Fund.
