The Town and Municipality of Yarmouth are exploring questions about a possible merger.
A joint release says the respective councils met on Tuesday for an exploratory discussion on municipal consolidation.
Municipality of the District of Yarmouth Warden John Cunningham says he first made the motion to explore the possibility of a merger in February 2020.
“Our municipal council wants to take a thoughtful look at what opportunities might be available to improve our municipal government for all of the residents of Yarmouth county,” says Cunningham. “Our work with the town is a key piece for this to start.”
Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood says they are in the preliminary stages and the next step is to answer their own internal questions.
“It’s just really important for all of us as elected officials to see if there’s anything we can do better, then we own it to our citizens to do that,” says Mood. “Some questions were posed and we’ll get some answers to those and see where we are.”
Mayor Mood, Warden Cunningham, the Deputy Mayor, Deputy Warden and Chief Administrative Officers are preparing material related to questions that were raised and the group will meet again to explore them.
They say no decisions have been made at this point.
