The RCMP are stressing road safety for the Victoria Day long weekend.
They’re reminding drivers to wear seatbelts, drive sober, stay focused and travel at safe speeds.
It’s also Canada Road Safety Week. Sgt. Mike Carter with Southwest Nova RCMP Traffic Services discussed what they will be doing.
“It’s a high impact, high enforcement weekend looking at targeting the causal factors of fatal and serious injury collisions. We have members that will be out in full force.”
Police are also asking the public to report any dangerous drivers.
Some signs to watch for:
- driving unreasonably fast, slow or at an inconsistent speed
- drifting in and out of lanes
- tailgating and changing lanes frequently
- making exceptionally wide turns
- changing lanes or passing without sufficient clearance
- overshooting or stopping well before stop signs or stop lights
- disregarding signals and lights
- approaching signals or leaving intersections too quickly or slowly
- driving without headlights, failing to lower high beams or leaving turn signals on
- driving with windows open in cold or inclement weather
If you make a report the RCMP ask that you be ready to provide:
- your location
- a description of the vehicle, including the license plate number, colour, make and model
- the direction of travel for the vehicle
- a description of the driver if visible
“Always drive defensively,” says Carter. “We expect that this being the first big holiday weekend outside of COVID-19 that people will be on the move, there will be lots of traffic volume on the roads.”
Saturday is also National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day. We’ll see province wide check stops looking for impaired drivers.
