Maxime Bernier, leader of the People's Party of Canada.
The leader of the People’s Party of Canada is in Nova Scotia.
Part of Maxime Bernier’s trip to the Atlantic provinces included a stop in Yarmouth.
He spoke to Y95 News about why he’s in this part of the country.
“I’m doing a tour all across Atlantic Canada, meeting people, building our organization and also we want to be sure that we will have candidates in every riding for the next election.”
Bernier served as the MP for Beauce, Quebec from 2006-2019 and decided to leave the Conservative Party of Canada in 2018 to form the PPC.
He also held a rally in Frost Park on Wednesday evening.
Bernier discussed a variety of issues, including the economy, environment and state of healthcare.
On inflation: “The inflation is always because of a bad monetary policy. We had a bad monetary policy in Canada, also in the US and Europe. We need to balance the budget. We will balance the budget, not by increasing your taxes, but by cutting spending.”
On the environment: “The good news is in Canada is the environment is a shared jurisdiction with provinces. In my own province of Quebec we don’t have a carbon tax because Quebec has another system to deal with climate change, with the cap and trade system. I want to lend that to provinces, that can be their responsibility. At the federal level, we the People’s Party of Canada, won’t impose a carbon tax, won’t impose more regulations.”
On healthcare: “We must give resources to provincial governments to be able to raise their own revenues for healthcare. The federal government is spending $38 billion in transfers to provinces for healthcare. I want provinces to be able to raise that money. Instead of giving them subsidies, we must give them the GST. They will have the tool to raise their money for their own jurisdiction.”
