Bilingual stop signs will soon be put up in Argyle.
At their monthly meeting, the municipal council approved a motion to exchange the existing signs, for ones in both French and English.
Argyle Warden Danny Muise says the signs will be put up with no cost to the municipality.
“We were approached by Acadian Affairs, through the province, and they are sponsoring this,” says Muise. “We felt that: the money was there, we are an Acadian municipality, so why not take advantage of the program?”
Council debated only putting the signs in French speaking communities, but decided to put them up everywhere.
Muise discusses why they chose to replace all of the municipality’s stop signs.
“We have some districts that are mostly English but there are French people in every district that we have,” says Muise. “We found that it’s probably best to put them at every stop sign in the municipality.”
He hopes the bilingual signs will be put in place sometime in the spring.
Clare also decided to add bilingual stop signs in July of last year.
