A chance to learn more about aquaculture.
The Municipality of the District of Yarmouth’s Planning Advisory Committee are starting their Aquaculture Learning Plan workshops next week.
They’ve recruited a number of experts and industry members to hold one hour long presentations.
Committee chair Trevor Cunningham says the workshops are important for both the committee and council.
“The PAC and council want to learn as much as they can about aquaculture so that they can make informed decisions about any potential changes to our by-laws or municipal planning strategy.”
The schedule is:
Monday, October 25, 2021
- Inka Milewski, Research Associate – 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Jim Duston, Professor Fin Fish Aquaculture, Dalhousie University – 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
- Private Citizen – 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Tuesday, October 26, 2021
- Gregor Reid, Canadian Center for Marine Applied Research – 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
- Boreal Salmon – 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
- Tom Smith, Sea Farmers NS – 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Thursday, November 25, 2021
- NS Fisheries & Aquaculture – 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The workshops will be livestreamed on MODY’s Facebook page.
Cunningham says the public wanted more information about aquaculture and urges anyone interested to attend the sessions.
“Lots of information will be brought forward and I think that it certainly will round out everybody’s understanding of aquaculture and decisions that need to be made moving forward.”
The workshops are the result of the PAC’s Aquaculture Learning Plan, which was approved in September.
They come as the committee is considering potential changes to the land-use by-law and municipal planning strategy to allow different types of aquaculture activities.
If the changes are made, Boreal Salmon would look to develop an open-flow, land-based salmon farm in Chebogue Point, but many in the community have cited concerns with risk to fish stocks and the environment.
